What things?
He said, "For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you" John 13:15.
What had he done?
He had "rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded" John 13:4-5.
This didn’t come from nowhere, but many good things he had done, and when He knew these were his seed and his fruit who would further grow his work, and "that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end" John 13:1.
This he did because he cared so much for them, he loved them and could do anything for them. I recall in Chapter 17 when He prayed, He said, "Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are." John 17:11. He said, "I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You. For I have given to them the words which You have given Me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that You sent Me." John 17:6-8.
They have known that all things which You have given Me are from You. Now do you now know that you believe because of Him? It’s God who has drawn you to this light. He said, "They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word."
He said, "For I have given to them the words which You have given Me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that You sent Me."
Peter not knowing the significance of this said to Him, "You shall never wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me." John 13:8. He said, "What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this."
Anyway after He had washed them He said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet" John 13:12-14.
He said I have given you an example to follow: do as I have done to you, and this is true that a servant is not greater than his master. Nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends him. We God with humility of mind.
Where you love, love to the end, love the brotherhood. Paul said to Philemon, "For we have great joy and consolation in thy love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother" Philemon 1:7. Be kind, not because you have to, but because you want to.
Love the brotherhood; welcome others, forgive and nourish them, and the blessing of our Lord Jesus Christ will be upon you.
Jesus said, "If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen..." John 13:17-18.
Not every man will receive this though, but those he has chosen will do as he has instructed and not exploiting other believers or the gospel.
